Casey's Story

Casey is a nationally Certified Pet Dog Trainer, Cerfified Primary Level TAGteach, an official Canine Good Citizen Evaluator, a Founder of the NW Chapter of North Star Foundation, Founder of Foundational Dog Trainers Association, and Founder of Wonder Puppy, LLC (formally Portland Paws).

Casey enjoys teaching group classes at WP, and co-teaches the professional trainers program, educating aspiring trainers and assistants in the use of gentle, reliable training techniques. She is also in the process of developing Wonder Puppy’s training products, and works with North Star Foundation autism service dogs and their families.

Casey’s dog training career began in Jackson Hole, WY, in 2002, when she opened her first business, Creature Comforts Professional Pet Sitting and Dog Training. Previously she obtained her Bachelor’s Degree in Psychology with a focus on Animal Behavior from the College of Charleston, SC, in addition to completing an in-depth study of Ethology through the internationally renowned Comparative Behavior Program offered by the University of Tennessee.

Casey’s love for animals developed much earlier with her own family pets. As a child her “siblings” were the Dachshunds, German Shepherds, and Borzois that her parents bred and showed. Growing up with animals was invaluable for Casey—it gave her the magic touch that every professional trainer needs.

Belle, Black Lab

“Belle is our 8-month-old black labrador retriever. We call Casey Newton her fairy godmother because she has had such a magical touch with our puppy.

“Casey began working with Belle soon after we brought our 8-week-old home to live with us. Her training method of capturing and subsequently reinforcing the behavior we wanted to see in Belle has been amazingly effective. It has resulted in Belle being a very fast learner, and well-trained in important behaviors such as ‘come,’ ‘sit,’ ‘stay,’ and many more. You can see the wheels turning in Belle's head as she learns! She is a very calm, obedient, loving dog. What else could we have asked for? Thank you, Casey!”

Sassy, North Star Autism Service Dog, Golden Retriever

“Wonder Puppy and Casey have been so wonderful! We are now in the middle of taking the final level Wonder Puppy class for our dog, Sassy, whom we are training to be our son’s Autism Service Dog. We were blessed to receive Sassy from the North Star Foundation and have her bred from such wonderful parents, which gave her a great foundation—but she still needed to be trained! Casey’s dedication has helped us make Sassy the great dog that she is, and I know that with Casey’s help, Sassy will be the best service dog in the world… at least for her boy, Jack. Thank you, Casey, for your dedication, passion, and the loving teaching you have shown our family and Sassy.”

—Kathy, Sassy & Family

Egil, Schnoodle

“Casey and Wonder Puppy are amazing resources for our family. Our dog Egil LOVES her! We never worry when he is with her; in fact, I look forward to hearing about the activities he’s engaged in: hikes, dog park visits, walks—it’s dog vacation! Our dog started off in Casey’s puppy kindergarten class, and we claim that his time with her now is equivalent to continuing education credits! Thank you, Casey!”

Siegmar, Lab Mix

“Two months ago, we were considering adopting a wonderful but active 8-month-old lab mix from the Oregon Humane Society. When the shelter counselors expressed worry that a young, untrained pup would likely not fit well into our household, we almost passed on adopting him. Fortunately, we met Casey Newton of Wonder Puppy… because of her, we have found our new love!

“Prior to adoption, Casey came to our home to assess our setup and address a few issues with our three cats, one of which is dog-aggressive. She then went to the Humane Society with me and conducted a personality assessment of our sweet Siegmar. Casey worked with Siegy for about 20 minutes, and I could already see a difference in his attitude towards listening to, and working with, people. From that brief assessment, it was clear to me that Casey was a kind, caring and extremely knowledgeable trainer. My new pup truly looked to her for guidance and support. I knew that we would have a wonderful dog in Siegy if we were to continue working with Casey, to help make it happen.

“Two months later, after some private training sessions at my home and a beginning puppy obedience class, Siegy is well-integrated into our house and lives happily with the kitties. I highly recommend Casey to anyone looking to strengthen their bond with their dog. Her approach to training is easy to understand. She is able to explain the end goals in a way that guides owners to success, and she is positive and kind to the animals at all times. Casey is truly gifted, and I feel fortunate to have had her help with Siegy and my three cats, Elliot, Vinnie and JoJo.”

Fritz, Miniature Schnauzer

“Casey Newton effectively trained us to train our dog. Clicker training has been great for us and our Miniature Schnauzer, Fritz. He looks forward to the training and really responds to it. I have discovered that I can easily use clicker training in the house, out on walks and in public places to shape Fritz's behavior. We've used it for basic obedience training and for teaching tricks. Casey has a real talent for communicating with dogs and for teaching us how to communicate with our dog. It has been fun and enlightening.”

Clancy, Cock-a-Poo

“I did not plan to get a puppy at a pet shop; I had heard so many warnings about the puppy mills and all of the potential problems with this industry. Instead, we were planning to purchase a well-bred terrier for my 12-year-old son. One day while shoe-shopping, I casually dropped into a pet store to look at kennels, and saw that adorable little ball of fur... I guess I lost my sanity, because I left with not only a kennel, but also a sweet little 8-week-old cock-a-poo pup. Soon after we got home, I got really nervous and thought that I may have made a huge mistake.

“I had been researching breeds and training methods, and I knew that if we were to have any chance at all, we needed help. I was given a recommendation for Casey Newton. Casey was THE BEST!!!!!! She came to our house and started working with Clancy at just 10 weeks old. She helped us check him out and make sure that he was healthy and not too aggressive. I swear that without her help and reassurance, I would not have been able to keep our now perfectly wonderful pet-shop Cock-a-poo, Clancy. Casey showed us how to work with him on ‘good dog’ manners, and gave us a feel for basic dog psychology and normal development. She showed us how to use positive rewards and clicker training to capture the behaviors that we desired.

“It was so amazing how Clancy learned and enjoyed these sessions. It was seriously like magic how Casey shaped our puppy's behavior, teaching him to lie down in just one session. She gave us detailed instructions and lessons that were simple to reproduce when she was gone. Casey has a style that our puppy loved: she is firm and lovingwith both the puppy and the owners. Casey is a total professional, and her love for dogs definitely comes across in her training style.

“Having Casey involved so early in Clancy's life has paid us back a hundredfold, as he is now such a joyous, well-mannered, and wonderful member of our family. We continue to call her if we have any issues or questions, and we highly value her advice and support. She recently came over to help us teach Clancy to ring a cowbell hanging on the door handle, rather than scratching when he wants to go outside. He's quickly catching on. He really seems to enjoy it, as he rings the bell and looks up with a sparkle in his eye and an expectant doggie grin. It gives us a special bond of communication, and makes having a pet so worthwhile. Thanks so much Casey!!!”

Ashlie, Doberman

“We hired Casey Newton in August 2002 to pet-sit and train our new 12-week-old Doberman puppy. We made a thorough search of the area to locate the best person to care for our Ashlie.

“From day one, we have been extremely impressed with Casey’s many talents in Ashlie’s care and training. At only 5 months old, Ashlie was able to ‘heel,’ ‘down-stay,’ ‘sit-stay,’ ‘leave it,’ and most importantly, ‘come’ or ‘come about’ on command. Casey enabled us to enjoy our pet, and our pet truly enjoyed the training. She is consistent, observant of behavioral patterns (good and bad), and firm yet compassionate. Casey has the ability to explain to us owners how to train our pet, coaching us without making us feel inadequate. She is full of praise and love for our Ashlie. We will ask Casey to assist us with our ‘Creature Comforts’ whenever possible, because she is always professional and sincere. In all sincerity, we look forward to having her participate in our family again soon.”
